If you've had your fill of touristy Irish pubs and trendy cocktail bars and you fancy sampling an authentic Catalan drinking den, you won't do much better than Bar Canigó. Stark lighting, hard chairs, no central heating in winter or air conditioning in summer - this bar is the real deal. However, these minor flaws are more than compensated for by Canigó's two great strengths: its location and its astonishing cheapness. Situated at the top of Plaça Revolució and the bottom of calle Verdi, equidistant from the Fontana and Joanic metro stops and slap-bang in the centre of Gracia, this is the ideal place to meet friends and kick start your night out, especially since it's one of the most well known bars in the neighbourhood. As if this wasn't good enough, the price list redefines the term "economy". Bottled beers and spirits are very affordable, making it perfect for those getting sloshed on a budget. Despite a lack of music, décor or anything particularly distinctive, Canigó is very popular and much more enjoyable than it may appear from the outside. For those eager to venture off the beaten tourist track, this is an excellent place to start.

Update 2018 - Sample the wholesome tapas and craft beer on rickety old marble-top tables, as people have done here since 1922. The place maintains an authentic Catalan gruffness even though, or perhaps possibly because it is so popular, especially at weekends.
