Harlem Jazz Club

Comtessa de Sobradiel, 8 : M Jaume I L4 : Liceu L3
www.harlemjazzclub.es : Tel. 93 310 0755
**** : $$$$$
Located in the Barri Gótic section of Barcelona, Harlem Jazz club is an intimate setting for live music from around the globe, but focusing on blues, jazz, funk, soul & reggae. The venue is pretty small and mostly standing room only, with a tiny floor for dancing. The entree fee (€6 and includes a drink) is worth the price as far as the music goes, but be warned - additional drinks are on the expense side. The club sits down a small street in the heart of the old town and has quite a bohemian feel, with a more mature, discerning but friendly clientele. The live sets normally start around 10pm and go on until midnight or so, with the later hours given over to a variety of Barna's DJs when the tables are cleared and a younger crowd pours in to boogie the night away!

L'Ovella Negra

C/ Sitges 5 : M Catalunya L1 : Liceu L3
www.ovellanegra.com : Tel. 93 317 1087
*** : $$
Not to be confused with the "MegaTaverna" at Poble Nou, the L'Ovella Negra (The Black Sheep) is to be found bang in the center of Barcelona, just off the Ramblas. The place is styled as a tavern, with plenty of brickwork, wooden ceiling beams and rustic long tables and benches. The bar attracts a young, boistrous, but friendly crowd due to the availability of pitchers of beer and sangria at affordable prices. This is definitely a good place for groups, but get there early if you want to snag a table. That said, once the place fills up, don't be surprised to find others joining your bench as people seek somewhere to sit. And this is what makes the L'Ovella Negra a great place to meet new friends in Barcelona if you're new in town, so check it out!

Kennedy Irish Sailing Club

Moll de Mestral 26-28, Port Olympic : M Ciutadella / Vila Olímpica L4
Tel. 93 221 0039
*** : $$$$$
Down by the two towers on the waterfront of Port Olympic lies Kennedy Irish Sailing Club, a classic tourist's pub amongst the high-energy clubs that line the Moll de Mestral. Kennedy is a large pub, with polished wood finishes, high tables and stools, and nautical memorabilia adorning the walls. The ceiling of the main room is covered with a huge map of the Emerald Isle, while in the back corner a small stage provides a platform for local bands to belt out crowd-pleasing covers of rock, indie and pop tunes – a change from banging techno and house of the Mestral strip. Four plasma screens and two giant projectors show all major sports events and most of the crowd here will have their heads turned to the large TV's when there's football action. During summer an expansive terrace provides outside, sun-drenched seating overlooking the boats in the Port Olympic harbour. Due to its location, Kennedy is a favourite with the English speaking holiday crowd and the ambience is fun and lively as you might expect.

Yakuta Bar

C/ Merce 36 : M Jaume I L4 : Barceloneta L4 : Drassanes L3
Facebook Bar Yakuta : Tel. 63 772 1650
**** : $$$$
The Yakuta Bar has a really unique design and ambience, based around a modern stone cavern-like space. Go through to the back and there are posh luxury seats that furnish the low black tables. The low lighting, interesting art and cosmopolitan clientele make for a bar where time just passes by. Definitely a place to take a date or two, or for couples looking for a romantic location to spend an evening together. Yakuta is understandably very popular, so get there before 10pm for a chance to snag a coveted back room table. The front bar is pleasant enough too, though standing and stools are the order of the day here. Happy hour cocktails from 4pm 'till midnight with a flyer from the street. There is a big projection screen for sports events and free wi-fi too. In addition to the cocktails, there's a good selection of beers, snacks and a food menu if you're peckish. Definitely one of the better modern bars in Barcelona, and a real find!

Barramón

C/ Blai 28 : M Paral.lel L3 : Poble Sec L3
Facebook Page : Tel. 93 442 3080
**** : $$$$
Barramón (not to be confused with Bar Ramón in Sant Antoni) is one of the best Barcelona tapas bars situated on the very cool C/ Blai (the Gracia of Poble Sec). Sit back and chill out on their open terrace and watch the street life of Poble Sec pass by. The speciality tapas from the Canary Islands can be a bit on the pricey side, but all things considered, they are well worth it. Start with tapas and beers at Barramón and then move on down C/ Blai and check out the number of cool bars on this street, ending with Maumau club up on C/ Fontrodona.

Café Royale

C/ Nou de Zurbano 3 : M Liceu L3 : Drassanes L3
Café Royale website : Tel. +34 93 318 89 56 : Daily 11pm - 3am.
**** : $$$$
Café Royale is a fun, different type of club / lounge bar, full of locals and tourists alike. It's not a nightclub, but not just a bar either. With a busy bar area up front, tapas next door, and a lounge come dance area with couches in the back, the place offers something for everybody. The bar area finds a pleasant mixture of cultures and languages - fusing tourists and ex-pats together from all over the world, with a generous helping of Catalan locals too. The bar staff speaks English and is friendly and efficient. Café Royale is regaining its popularity, and always gets crowded on the weekends. That's no surprise, as it's one of the grooviest evening club options in town - perfect for chilling out with warm lighting, a good-looking crowd, and irresistible soul, funk and bossa fusions. The programme varies by day – Flamenco Tuesdays, Jazzy Wednesdays, Club Tropicana Thursdays, Clubby Fridays, Funky Saturdays and Housey Sundays - check the website for details.

Blondie Bar

C/ d'En Roca 14 : M Liceu L3
www.blondie-bcn.com
**** : $$
Like to go against the grain? Feel like you need some 80's punk, but not overtaken by cheap beer, very smelly dogs and cheap patio chairs? Well, Blondie Bar is a great punk / 2-tone themed cocktail bar. Sounds weird - and it is, but in a good way. The music is of course punk, but never really in your face. Mostly you can talk to the resident DJs as they are always near one of the tables there. I personally recommend the Wheels of Steel DJs that play on Wednesdays. Blondie is situated on a quiet street that seems to offer nothing, but don't be deceived - this bar offers a friendly atmosphere, great tunes and the best original cocktails in the city. Just ask for anything with strawberry in it. They're all served up by the Italian barmen, who are real geniuses! The cocktail list is in English and Blondie is just a stone's throw from Las Ramblas. Happy Hour Tuesday-Thursday 7pm-10pm
